This was a close call in Chi-Town! I was just around the corner when Battalion 14 reported smoke coming from the back of a single-story occupied home at 1635 S. Trumbull. It looks like the fire started at the electric meter due to a faulty connection on the rear of the house, right on the back porch. Engine 109 (the second engine) took the alley and laid out a pre-connected line to the rear of the building. It took some serious effort to get everything opened up and bring the fire under control. The crews worked quickly and had it all under control within about 20 minutes.
Here are some photos I snapped during the response. You can find more shots on our website. Oh, and we even found some old shell casings in the alley behind the house — leftovers from New Year's Eve! It’s always interesting to see what gets left behind after big events.
Check out the images below to see the scene as it unfolded. From firefighters working in heavy smoke to the flames licking the sides of the house, these pictures tell the story of a fast-moving but well-managed incident.
