Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District news

From an article on ChicagoTribune.com: Residents living within the Warren-Waukegan Fire Protection District can look forward to smaller tax bills following the approval of a massive $1.2 million tax abatement. This marks the district's largest abatement to date and ranks among the most significant local tax breaks in recent memory. The decision was made by the district board last week, reflecting their commitment to tackling resident concerns regarding property taxes. While it’s still too early to determine the exact tax savings for individual households, last year’s $300,000 abatement led to approximately a $75 reduction in annual taxes for the average household. The district encompasses unincorporated areas between Waukegan and Gurnee, extending westward into Grayslake, covering roughly 3,300 homes and structures. Although Park City is technically part of the district, it remains an incorporated municipality. In terms of emergency services, the district collaborates with the Gurnee Fire Department, which handles all fire and rescue squad responses across the district. In exchange, the district funds equipment and personnel costs to support this expanded coverage. Thanks to careful financial planning and assistance from Gurnee, the district has transformed from a previously struggling entity, which once faced annual deficits of up to $800,000 just 15 years ago, into a financially stable organization capable of implementing such substantial tax relief measures. Expanding Gurnee’s service area has also opened doors for grant opportunities and additional funding that wouldn’t have been available otherwise. Over the years, the district has invested heavily in new vehicles, purchasing multiple ambulances and fire engines. Additionally, they contributed to half the cost of Gurnee’s latest ladder truck. A decade ago, the district passed a resolution ensuring that no resident would incur out-of-pocket expenses for ambulance services. This move underscores the district's ongoing efforts to enhance public safety while reducing financial burdens on local taxpayers. Moving forward, these investments could pave the way for further collaboration and growth in both services and funding potential.
