In Wadsworth, Illinois, located at the northern tip of Lake County, the Newport Township Fire Protection District serves an area spanning 33 square miles. Their main station is situated off Wadsworth Road, just east of US 41. This well-equipped facility houses a tanker, two engines, a pumper squad, two ambulances, a utility vehicle, a staff car, an ATV, and a brush unit—ensuring they're ready for any emergency.
To improve response times in the northern part of their district, the FPD has rented a portion of a barn on Doug Reno’s property, a member of the department. The barn is also home to some of the department’s specialized equipment, including a crane truck that's stored on a neighbor’s farm.
Doug Reno is not only a dedicated firefighter but also a passionate collector of vintage fire apparatus. His collection includes several classic rigs, some of which are kept on his own property and others on a neighboring farm. Among the Newport Township FPD’s vehicles are:
- A 1977 CF Mack engine with 4,000 feet of 4-inch hose, featuring a black cab roof. Originally from Ligonier, Pennsylvania, it was acquired through the generosity of two department members.
- A 1951 Willy’s Jeep equipped with a 100-GPM front pump and a 150-gallon water tank, used primarily for parades.
- A beautifully restored 1969 Dodge Power Wagon W-300, once the department’s brush rig.
- A 1981 R-Model Mack box truck used as a Heavy Rescue unit carrying TRT supplies.
- A 1988 R-Model Mack flatbed with a 6,000-pound knuckle boom crane, serving as a foam tender or trench box carrier.
Doug’s personal collection features:
- A 1975 Ward LaFrance Ambassador engine labeled for the Wadsworth Fire Department (Ohio), complete with a 1,250-GPM pump and a 500-gallon water tank.
- A 1971 CF Mack engine that was originally used by the Geneva Fire Department in Kane County, Illinois, and later refurbished by Pierce in 1987.
- A CF Mack engine from Duncannon, Pennsylvania.
These historic vehicles reflect the rich legacy of firefighting in the region, preserved and maintained by those who understand their value. Whether on duty or on display, these machines tell the story of dedication, service, and passion.
Wetting agents are surfactants in coatings, both wetting agents and dispersants. Some additives have both wetting and dispersing functions, but there are still differences between wetting agents and dispersants in terms of their own functions. Wetting agents mainly reduce the surface tension of pigments and have a smaller molecular weight. Dispersants adsorb on the surface of pigments to generate charge repulsion or steric hindrance, preventing harmful flocculation of pigments and keeping the dispersion system in a stable state. Typically, dispersants have a larger molecular weight.
