In Wadsworth, Illinois, located at the northern end of Lake County, the Newport Township Fire Protection District (FPD) serves an area spanning 33 square miles. Their main station is situated off Wadsworth Road, just east of US 41. This well-equipped station houses a variety of apparatus, including a tanker, two engines, a pumper squad, two ambulances, a utility vehicle, a staff car, an ATV, and a brush unit. To improve response times for the northern part of their district, the FPD has rented a section of a barn on the property of Doug Reno, one of its own members.
The building, located at 42874 Delaney Road in Zion, also serves as a temporary storage space for some of the department's equipment. Among the items stored there is a crane truck, which is kept on a nearby farm. These arrangements help the FPD manage their resources more efficiently while maintaining a strong presence across the community.
Doug Reno is not only a dedicated member of the FPD but also a passionate collector of fire apparatus. His personal collection includes several vintage vehicles that have found a new home on his property and even on another neighbor’s land. The Newport Township FPD itself operates a range of historic and modern equipment, including:
- A 1977 CF Mack engine with 4,000 feet of 4-inch hose. This unique rig features a black cab roof and was previously used in Ligonier, Pennsylvania before being acquired by two department members.
- A 1951 Willys Jeep parade piece equipped with a 100-GPM front pump and a 150-gallon water tank.
- A beautifully restored 1969 Dodge Power Wagon W-300, once used as the department’s brush unit.
- A 1981 R-Model Mack box truck designated as a Heavy Rescue unit, carrying TRT supplies.
- A 1988 R-Model Mack flatbed with a 6,000-pound knuckle boom crane, used as a trench box carrier or foam tender for the Quad 2 ARFF unit.
Doug’s personal collection includes:
- A 1975 Ward LaFrance Ambassador engine labeled for the Wadsworth Fire Department (Ohio), featuring a 1,250-GPM pump and a 500-gallon water tank (serial number 80-1129).
- A 1971 CF Mack engine that was later refurbished by Pierce for the Geneva Fire Department in Kane County.
- A CF Mack engine from Duncannon, Pennsylvania.
These vehicles are stored in a shared space that also houses Newport’s crane truck, 1455. Many of these pieces are not only historical artifacts but also serve as reminders of the dedication and passion that drive both the FPD and individuals like Doug Reno. Whether it's through emergency response or personal collection, the spirit of service and preservation continues to thrive in this small but active community.
