Excerpts from DailyHerald.com:
On Tuesday evening, the Elgin Fire Department held its annual awards ceremony, celebrating dozens of individuals who demonstrated exceptional courage and dedication. From a young boy who spotted a fire and saved his family to firefighters performing life-saving procedures in the field, the event honored those who went above and beyond their duties.
This was the first formal awards ceremony in over a decade, made possible by a newly reorganized committee led by Lt. Dan Wagner, according to Fire Chief John Fahy. The committee reviewed hundreds, if not thousands, of documents detailing the actions of the department, which handles up to 12,000 emergency calls annually. "Many of the honorees did that extra thing to make it right," Fahy said, highlighting the commitment of the community and the department.
Among the recipients was 11-year-old Nathan Pagnoni, who quickly alerted his grandmother when he discovered a garage fire. "I was really scared," Nathan admitted, but he felt proud when he got to meet the firefighters and take photos with them at the ceremony.
Dawn Stoner, project manager at Advocate Sherman Hospital, played a key role in organizing a large-scale terrorism training exercise involving 12 fire departments and other agencies at the hospital’s Center Street location.
A father-and-son team, Don Michael Bush and Michael Sean Bush, were recognized for helping put out a kitchen fire and later organizing a fundraiser for the affected family.
Nurse Angela Flintz used an automated external defibrillator on a man who collapsed during an Elgin Township Triad meeting. Andrew J. Robinson helped extinguish a small fire with a garden hose, while employees Nohemi C. Farfan and Jasmine Becerra from Burlington Coat Factory swiftly responded to a clothing rack fire.
Several firefighters received the department’s first-ever Phoenix Awards for saving patients in full cardiorespiratory arrest. One team responded to a heroin overdose, while another helped a man who stopped breathing at a nursing home.
Company awards were given to a team that performed an emergency cricothyrotomy on a gunshot victim, and to firefighters who rescued an infant who was choking. Two Meijer employees, Joseph A. Kearns and Sean R. Markwood, who couldn’t attend the ceremony, were also honored for providing CPR and using an AED during a cardiac arrest.
The department’s active shooter and strategic planning committees received unit citations, and 28 of the 133 total department members were recognized for their military service.
Thanks, Dan.
