As I stood outside the newly constructed station of the Crete Township Fire Protection District, I couldn't help but admire the modern architecture that blended seamlessly with its surroundings. The district, part of MABAS Division 27, operates out of three strategically located stations, each equipped with a diverse fleet of firefighting vehicles. Their engines, a mix of high-quality models from manufacturers like Pierce, E-ONE, Luverne, and Alexis, reflect their commitment to excellence and safety. One particular highlight is the ambulance service provided by Medtec, ensuring swift medical response when needed. Additionally, the department maintains three tankers (tenders), with the most recent addition being a state-of-the-art model completed back in 2011. Built by Alexis on a robust Freightliner M2 chassis, this tanker exemplifies durability and efficiency. Looking back to 1995, Crete Township joined several other south suburban fire departments in ordering an engine from Luverne, mounted on an HME 1871 chassis. Notably, two of these units featured the largest extended and raised cabs available at the time, with one remaining in active service today at Crete Township. This vehicle boasts a fully enclosed pump operator panel, showcasing advanced design features. Inside the station, a glance at the Crete Township Fire Protection District patch caught my attention. It symbolizes the dedication and pride of the firefighters who serve this community. Recently, the district welcomed another impressive addition to its fleet—a 3,000-gallon tender crafted by Alexis on a Freightliner chassis. A striking graphic adorns the porta-tank cover, illustrating a steamer that underwent refurbishment by Gene Morris of Alexis Fire Equipment. Adjacent to the tender, I found myself captivated by the close-up image of the steamer's graphics. These designs, captured beautifully in a photograph by Bill Friedrich, stand as a testament to the craftsmanship and attention to detail exhibited by the team at Alexis Fire Equipment. The graphic itself represents a steamer housed at their facility, further emphasizing the collaborative efforts between local fire departments and equipment suppliers. Reflecting on my visit, it’s clear that the Crete Township Fire Protection District not only prioritizes cutting-edge technology but also fosters strong relationships within the firefighting community. Each piece of equipment tells a story of innovation, teamwork, and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. Whether responding to emergencies or conducting routine checks, these firefighters embody professionalism and resilience every single day.
