The Countryside Fire Protection District called for a second alarm hazardous materials unit this morning following an accident involving a tipped-over truck trailer in Vernon Hills. According to *The Daily Herald*, the incident caused major traffic delays on one of central Lake County’s busiest roads.
Wednesday morning, a section of Route 60 near Butterfield Road was closed for several hours, disrupting rush-hour traffic. The accident occurred at around 6:20 a.m., and no serious injuries were reported, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich of the Countryside Fire Protection District.
The truck, operated by Con-way Freight, was pulling two trailers when one of them overturned as it turned from southbound Butterfield Road onto eastbound Route 60. The vehicle was carrying two 300-gallon tanks each of potassium hydroxide and phosphoric acid, both of which leaked upon the accident. A hazardous materials team was dispatched to contain the leaks and assist with cleanup efforts.
Tim Olk was on the scene and captured several images of the response, showing the hazardous materials team at work and the heavy equipment involved in righting the overturned trailer. The cleanup process took several hours, and traffic gradually resumed after the area was deemed safe. Local authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.
