The Countryside Fire Protection District (FPD) called for a second alarm hazardous materials unit this morning following an accident involving a tipped-over truck trailer in Vernon Hills. According to the *Daily Herald*, the incident caused significant traffic delays on one of central Lake County’s busiest roads.
Wednesday morning saw a major disruption on Route 60 near Butterfield Road, as a truck's trailer overturned during the early rush hour. No serious injuries were reported, according to Battalion Chief Kevin Wodrich of the Countryside FPD. The incident occurred at approximately 6:20 a.m., when the truck—operated by Con-way Freight—was turning from southbound Butterfield Road onto eastbound Route 60.
The vehicle was carrying two trailers, each containing two 300-gallon tanks of hazardous chemicals: potassium hydroxide and phosphoric acid. One of the trailers flipped onto its side, causing leaks. A hazardous materials team was quickly dispatched to contain the spill and ensure safe cleanup. The road remained closed for several hours, causing major congestion and frustration for commuters.
Tim Olk, a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several images of the response. His photos show the overturned trailer, the hazardous materials team working on site, and the heavy tow trucks involved in righting the vehicle. These images provide a clear view of the scale of the incident and the efforts made to manage the situation safely.
The event highlights the importance of emergency preparedness and the quick response of local authorities in dealing with hazardous material incidents. It also serves as a reminder of the dangers associated with transporting such substances on busy roads.
