This month, Autodesk joined over a hundred companies as one of the first signatories of the EU Artificial Intelligence (AI) Pact. The event took place in Brussels on September 25, where Clémence Arto, Director of EMEA Government Affairs and Public Policy at Autodesk, along with Anthony Ruto, Senior Director of Research Engineering, participated in a ceremony that brought together various signatories and EU officials. Both representatives expressed their commitment to adopting the principles of the upcoming EU AI Act even before it officially comes into effect.
The AI Pact, initiated by the European Commission, encourages companies to voluntarily pledge support for fostering trustworthy and safe AI development in anticipation of the AI Act’s implementation. Set to roll out over the next three years, the AI Act was established in August 2024 and aims to establish clear guidelines and obligations for AI developers and users. Its primary objective is to promote AI systems that can be trusted both within Europe and globally.
By signing the EU AI Pact, companies agree to undertake at least three key actions: developing an AI governance strategy to integrate AI effectively across their organizations and prepare for future compliance with the AI Act; identifying and mapping AI systems that could potentially fall under high-risk categories as defined by the Act; and promoting AI awareness and ethical responsibility within their teams. These commitments underscore a collective effort to ensure AI development aligns with ethical standards and societal values.
Autodesk has been at the forefront of AI research and development for over a decade, leveraging these technologies to enhance creativity, automate mundane tasks, and provide data-driven insights for better decision-making processes. Throughout this journey, Autodesk has consistently prioritized building integrity and trust into its AI solutions. Signing the EU AI Pact represents another significant milestone in this ongoing mission.
Beyond signing the AI Pact, Autodesk is deeply engaged in multiple projects aimed at promoting trusted AI across different sectors. For instance, the company collaborates with the U.S. AI Safety Institute Consortium (AISIC), managed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and actively participates in the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI).
Mike Haley, Senior Vice President of Research at Autodesk, remarked, "AI is poised to redefine how we interact with technology." He added, "We commend the EU for being among the first to introduce regulations steering AI's potential toward broader societal benefits. Our aim is to channel the immense capabilities of AI to create positive transformations worldwide."
Looking ahead, Autodesk anticipates sharing its advancements, learning from peers, and continuing to set examples as leaders in trusted AI innovation. This approach aims to inspire new approaches to design and production processes.
