A recent piece from National Geographic highlights the dangers of reaching for a warm plastic bottle to quench your thirst, particularly during the summer. Rolf Halden, director of the Center for Environmental Health Engineering at Arizona State University’s Biodesign Institute, cautions against this habit, stating, “The higher the temperature, the more the chemicals in plastic can seep into food or drinking water.â€
Plastic water bottles are typically made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET). When these bottles are exposed to heat, they release chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) and antimony. Studies suggest that BPA can lead to adverse health effects, especially in children. Furthermore, antimony is classified as a carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization.
In a study led by University of Florida soil and water science professor Lena Ma, researchers examined the chemical changes in 16 different water brands after keeping them at 158 degrees Fahrenheit for four weeks. Their findings revealed a concerning “worst-case scenario†for human consumption. Over the four-week period, antimony and BPA levels rose significantly. Based on these results, Ma advises against leaving bottled water in a hot garage or car during scorching summer days.
The Impact of BPA and Antimony on Human Health
Both BPA and antimony have been associated with various health problems. BPA, for instance, has been linked to reproductive, immune, and nervous system issues. It has also been tied to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, metabolic disorders, childhood asthma, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Research indicates that BPA can even negatively influence children's behavior.
What about antimony? According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people are exposed to low levels of antimony naturally. Short-term inhalation exposure can irritate the eyes and skin, while long-term exposure has been connected to respiratory, cardiovascular, and reproductive problems. Although antimony isn't classified as a carcinogen by the EPA, studies have shown that it can promote lung tumor growth in rats when inhaled.
How Often Is Too Often?
Now, how concerned should you be about drinking from a warm plastic bottle? It largely depends on how frequently you do it. Overall, the trace amounts of chemicals consumed from a single warm bottle aren't likely to result in severe health issues. However, experts emphasize that regular exposure increases the risks.
Halden explains, “Drinking from one PET bottle probably won’t harm you. But if you’re consuming from 20 bottles a day, the safety concerns change dramatically.â€
The cumulative effect of being surrounded by plastics or microplastics in our water poses the greatest threat to our health. Additionally, while not part of her initial study, Ma encourages using tap water, which is regulated by the EPA, over bottled water.
