The new superconducting current limiter was successfully developed
The 35kV superconducting current limiter, a key project under the municipal science and technology innovation special fund, has been successfully developed by Tianjin Electromechanical Industry Holding Group Co., Ltd. in collaboration with Beijing Yundian Yingna Superconducting Cable Co., Ltd. Recently, the device was commissioned for grid-connected trial operation at Phuket Substation in Yunnan Province. According to industry experts, this 35kV superconducting current limiter represents the most advanced technology of its kind globally, holding the record for the highest voltage level and largest capacity among similar devices.
As power grids expand and become more interconnected, the risk of sudden high fault currents due to short circuits or ground faults increases. These events can lead to severe damage to equipment, endanger lives, and cause widespread blackouts. To address this challenge, the saturated iron core type superconducting current limiter offers a revolutionary solution. By utilizing a superconducting coil, it transitions from low impedance during normal operation to high impedance during fault conditions, effectively limiting short-circuit currents. This technology is particularly effective in high-voltage and ultra-high-voltage grids, offering an irreplaceable advantage in terms of safety and stability.
Tianjin Electromechanical Industry leveraged its industrial technology platform to collaborate with Beijing Yundian Yingna Superconducting Cable Co., Ltd., focusing on the saturated iron core type as a breakthrough in superconducting applications. The team successfully developed prototypes for both 35kV and 220kV systems. They achieved significant progress in critical technologies such as fast DC interruption, core cross-section optimization, and voltage clamping. The result is a superconducting current limiter with world-leading performance and independent intellectual property rights. It is significantly smaller, lighter, and less expensive than traditional equipment, with only one-tenth of the operational losses. So far, the project has filed eight patent applications.
This successful development marks Tianjin's leadership in superconducting power technology and elevates China’s capabilities in this field to a new level. Currently, the "Research and Development of 220kV High Temperature Superconducting Current Limiter" has been included in the national “Eleventh Five-Year Plan†863 Program. It is expected to be connected to the grid in 2009, further advancing China’s position in next-generation power grid technologies.
