Mold manufacturing serves as the foundation for the broader manufacturing sector, with approximately 60–80% of electronic, automotive, electrical, instrumentation, appliance, and general industrial products relying on molding processes. In 2005, the Chinese mold market reached a capacity of 80 billion yuan, and experts predict that this figure will rise to 120 billion yuan during the next five-year plan. One major challenge comes from the growing presence of foreign-funded enterprises in the Chinese market. During the "Tenth Five-Year Plan," the Chinese mold industry experienced rapid growth, with an average annual increase of 20%. By 2005, sales had reached 61 billion yuan, up 25% from the previous year. However, foreign companies are increasingly entering the market, bringing advanced technology, strong financial backing, and competitive advantages through access to low-cost labor and materials. Companies like Germany’s Haila Jilin, Japan’s Toyota Mold, and Finland’s Belrose have established production facilities in China, targeting high-end sectors such as telecommunications, healthcare, and electronics. This influx of foreign capital has raised concerns that domestic firms may struggle to compete, especially in the high-value segment of the market. Without significant improvements in their own capabilities, Chinese companies risk being pushed out of key markets by foreign competitors. Currently, China’s mold industry ranks second globally, but most enterprises operate in mid-to-low-end segments with limited technological advancement and low added value. According to the China Die and Mould Industry Association, critical molds—such as precision stamping dies, plastic molds, and car body molds—are still heavily imported, leading to a trade deficit exceeding 10% in mold products, amounting to billions of dollars annually. Domestic enterprises also face several internal challenges. First, innovation remains weak due to insufficient investment in R&D and a lack of skilled professionals capable of leveraging new technologies. Second, overall industry efficiency is low, with many companies using outdated equipment and lacking full integration of modern CAD/CAM systems. Third, standardization and commercialization levels are low, resulting in poor collaboration and inefficiencies in the supply chain. Finally, mold materials and related technologies lag behind global standards, affecting both quality and cost-effectiveness. Externally, foreign investors typically avoid joint ventures, preferring to maintain control over core technologies. They either collaborate directly with customers or set up independent operations in China to take advantage of lower labor and material costs. These foreign firms often keep their design processes overseas and use the internet to distribute work to local subcontractors, further limiting opportunities for domestic firms to gain technical knowledge or market share. In summary, while the Chinese mold industry holds great promise, it must address both internal weaknesses and external pressures to remain competitive in the global market.
