Since 2008, Tianjin has made significant progress in expanding its petrochemical infrastructure, particularly with the development of a 1 million tons/year ethylene production complex and related facilities. On January 5th, Tianjin Petrochemical officially commenced construction on a major ethylene project with a capacity of 10 million tons per year, complemented by a 10 million tons/year atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit. Just three days later, on January 8th, two additional projects were launched: a 450,000-ton/year polypropylene plant and a 300,000-ton/year linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) plant. These developments marked a crucial step in enhancing the city's chemical industry capabilities. The 10 million-ton/year atmospheric and vacuum distillation unit incorporates advanced technologies that significantly improve energy efficiency compared to similar domestic units. The refined processes will lead to higher-quality products and greater operational efficiency. According to the project timeline, this facility is expected to be completed by March 2009, marking a major milestone for the region’s industrial growth. The 450,000-ton/year polypropylene plant utilizes cutting-edge technology developed globally, making it one of the largest single-line polypropylene production facilities in the world. It also stands as the largest such facility in China. Meanwhile, the 300,000-ton/year LLDPE plant represents a breakthrough, being the first large-scale polyethylene plant built using Sinopec's proprietary technologies. This project showcases the company’s growing technical expertise and self-reliance in petrochemical manufacturing. In parallel, the basic design phase for the entire project has been fully underway. Following the approval of the overall design proposal by the headquarters, Tianjin Petrochemical intensified its collaboration with relevant departments and design teams. The project team focused on meeting key milestones and accelerating the design process. To support this effort, the company restructured its internal organization and expanded its workforce. The number of personnel in the design department increased from 18 to 89, ensuring sufficient capacity to meet tight deadlines. Currently, all 19 new and upgraded installations within the refinery project have had their basic designs reviewed and approved by the headquarters. Among the eight new ethylene-related installations, seven have already passed the basic design review. Additionally, the thermal power project and the railway expansion and reconstruction project have also completed their basic design phases and received final approvals. These achievements reflect the steady progress of the project and its alignment with long-term strategic goals.
