In the first half of the year, China exported 35,600 vehicles to Russia in an amount of 450 million U.S. dollars.
In recent years, as China's automobile industry has experienced rapid growth, a wide range of competitive automotive products have started to enter international markets, becoming a subject of growing interest. Among these, Russia stands out as a particularly promising market. In 2005, Russia ranked sixth in China's export destinations, but by 2006 it had climbed to the top, and this position remained unchanged in the first half of 2007. Industry experts from both China and Russia believe that the automobile trade between the two countries will continue to grow rapidly, offering new momentum for bilateral economic and trade cooperation.
According to official data, during the first half of this year, China exported 38,600 vehicles to Russia, with an export value reaching $450 million—marking a significant increase of 355.8% and 477.6% respectively compared to the same period last year. Xu Haiguang, manager of the Import and Export Company at FAW Group, noted that there are over 25 million vehicles currently in use in Russia, with about half needing to be scrapped or upgraded. Due to the slow technological development within the Russian auto industry, which often produces older models with lower quality, domestic car production remains limited—ranging between 1 million and 1.5 million units annually. This is far from meeting the rising demand in the market. As the Russian economy recovers and living standards improve, mid-range vehicles priced between $10,000 and $15,000 are gaining popularity among consumers.
Thanks to Russia's vast market potential and its close geographical proximity to China, many Chinese automakers are intensifying their efforts to expand sales in the region. At the recent "2007 China-Russia Automobile Trade Cooperation Forum," Fu Peizhao, deputy secretary-general of the Automotive Branch of the China Machinery & Electrical Products Import & Export Association, highlighted that several major Chinese automakers—including Chery, Great Wall, CNHTC, Beiqi Foton, BAIC, FAW, Yutong, Yuejin, Hafei, Brilliance, Suzhou Jinlong, Zhongtong Bus, and Hebei Zhongxing—have achieved notable success in the Russian market. He emphasized that Chinese automotive products offer excellent value for money and a comprehensive range of options, from passenger cars to commercial vehicles.
Yuri Kovalenko, vice chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Russia’s Binhai District, shared his positive impressions of Chinese products in recent years. Although he hasn't personally driven a Chinese car, he mentioned that many of his friends praise them for their affordability and good performance. He expressed hope that Chinese automakers could introduce more advanced, high-end models in the future and suggested that China and Russia collaborate to establish advertising agencies to better promote Chinese brands to Russian consumers.
