SITE BITE: Fixing Misinstalled Chilled Water Coils

Join us on-site with Stephen Barzelatto, VP of Nationwide Coils, as he uncovers and resolves improperly installed chilled water coils.

On-Site with Stephen - Coil Installation

Not long ago, I was tasked with measuring six chilled water coils for replacement at a major hospital here in Florida. As I inspected the units, I was quite surprised to find out that all six coils were originally installed as left-handed coils. However, based on my assessment, three of those coils should have actually been right-handed models.

This kind of mix-up might not seem like a big deal at first glance, but when it comes to HVAC systems, especially in critical environments like hospitals, getting the wrong coil type or orientation can have serious consequences. Having the wrong direction of airflow or counter flow reduces the unit's overall capacity and impacts the quality of the indoor air. For this specific case, the error resulted in a 2-3% efficiency drop per row of the chilled water coil. Considering this was a six-row coil, that added up to a potential 15% decrease in efficiency. Over time, such inefficiencies lead to higher operational costs, reduced system performance, and unnecessary wear on equipment.

Luckily, I caught this discrepancy during the initial measurement phase and ensured that the correct-handed replacement coils were promptly installed. It's just another example of why partnering with a seasoned commercial coil provider like Nationwide Coils is so important. Our expertise ensures that every coil we supply is a precise match for your needs, allowing you to focus on other aspects of your project without worrying about compatibility issues.

In conclusion, always double-check coil specifications before installation, especially in sensitive settings like healthcare facilities. A small oversight can lead to significant problems down the line if not addressed early on.
