Novartis builds raw material production base in Suzhou

The Suzhou-based raw material production and development facility, the first of its kind established by Novartis in China, officially broke ground with a ceremonial foundation stone-laying ceremony. The project marks a significant milestone in Novartis' strategic expansion within the Chinese market. With an initial investment of $83 million, the facility is set to begin operations by the end of 2007. Once completed, it will play a key role in Novartis’ global production network and supply chain, reinforcing the company's commitment to the region. As one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, Novartis has consistently ranked among the top 500 global corporations. In 2005, it was recognized as the second most valuable brand in the pharmaceutical industry according to Businessweek’s Global Top 100 Brand Rankings. Prior to this new facility, Novartis had already established five operational entities in China, with total investments exceeding $100 million. By 2005, the company had achieved sales of 1.97 billion yuan in the Chinese market, demonstrating strong growth and market penetration. Li Zhenfu, President of Novartis China, emphasized that the Suzhou project represents a major step forward for the company. It is the first time that a leading multinational pharmaceutical firm has set up a dedicated raw material production and R&D base in China, specifically targeting global markets. The project includes a state-of-the-art chemical development center, along with two production facilities. The drug development center will focus on producing active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) for innovative medicines, further enhancing Novartis’ ability to support its global product pipeline. This new facility not only strengthens Novartis’ presence in China but also underscores the country’s growing importance as a hub for pharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing. The Suzhou project is expected to create numerous job opportunities and contribute to the local economy while supporting the company’s long-term vision of sustainable growth and global leadership in healthcare.
