Conceptual design represents the initial phase of a project where core ideas and fundamental parameters are defined. These early-stage solutions are intentionally minimal in detail, making them easy for stakeholders to understand and engage with. This phase is crucial for exploring creative possibilities, testing feasibility, and setting the foundation for more detailed development later on.
In every industry, conceptual design plays a vital role in communicating strategic vision and gathering early feedback. Recognizing this, Autodesk has introduced two new tools at AIA 2013 in Denver, Colorado, aimed at enhancing the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process during the conceptual stage. These innovations support architects, engineers, and construction professionals in creating, testing, and refining ideas more efficiently.
One of these tools is **Autodesk FormIt 4.0**, a mobile application designed for quick and intuitive 3D modeling. With seamless integration into Autodesk Revit, it allows users to create and present designs directly on an iPad. Since its launch in November 2012, FormIt has been downloaded in over 108 countries, demonstrating its global appeal and usability.
The other tool is **Dynamo**, an open-source visual programming platform that enhances BIM workflows. It works with Revit and Vasari to enable parametric design, allowing users to generate and modify geometry using rules and logic. This makes it easier to test multiple design concepts rapidly and apply analysis tools to refine and optimize them.
Both FormIt and Dynamo integrate smoothly with Revit, ensuring data consistency and workflow efficiency between the conceptual and production phases. This connection also gives designers access to advanced analysis tools earlier in the process, improving decision-making and adding value from the start.
According to Sean Burke, LEED® AP and Associate/Design Technology Manager at NBBJ, “Dynamo is a powerful tool because it simplifies the creation of complex designs within Revit. Autodesk’s tools make the transition from concept to production smoother by offering deeply integrated solutions.â€
Amar Hanspal, Senior Vice President of Information Modeling Products at Autodesk, added, “The AEC industry has embraced BIM for detailed design and construction. Now, conceptual design stands to benefit even more from BIM technologies. The release of FormIt 4.0 and Dynamo reflects our commitment to providing intuitive, flexible, and connected tools that support idea generation across all platforms.â€
With these new additions, Autodesk offers a comprehensive solution for BIM-based conceptual design, available on mobile, web, and desktop platforms. This enables architects to capture ideas anytime, test them quickly, and seamlessly integrate them into the broader design process.
