Residents of the community recently gathered at an open house to celebrate the grand opening of the brand-new fire station located at 1600 Reinking Road. This state-of-the-art facility, spanning 12,700 square feet, came with a price tag of $3.7 million. It features a 24-hour accessible lobby, a community room available for reservation by residents and local non-profits, a dedicated decontamination area, a training tower, a well-equipped fitness center, a cozy kitchen, a recreation room, and comfortable sleeping quarters.
“Our goal was to make sure the community knows we’re here for them,†remarked Lieutenant Scott Fehrman, who has been with the district for over three decades. The Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District serves several unincorporated areas in Kane County, covering less than 50 square miles. This includes Plato Township and portions of Rutland, Campton, and Elgin Townships, as noted by Fehrman. The new station replaces Fire House #2, which stood at the intersection of Route 20 and Reinking Road. That older building was over fifty years old, lacking basic amenities like a kitchen or sleeping quarters. It was originally staffed by volunteers and functioned primarily as a storage space for firefighting equipment.
Fehrman highlighted that the need for a new station became apparent as the area grew, particularly after the development of the Cambridge Lakes Subdivision in 2005 and the gated retirement community of Carillon two years later. These developments significantly increased emergency response demands.
About ten years ago, the fire district began budgeting annually for this new facility, as Trustee Todd Harris explained. Thanks to these efforts, the project is now fully funded. Fire Station #3 will also offer valuable services such as CPR training sessions and free blood pressure checks for residents. Additionally, they’ll provide the Knox Box Rapid Entry System for homes, allowing firefighters quick access during emergencies without causing property damage. Each box is securely attached to homes and contains keys and essential medical information, accessible only with a special key provided to firefighters.
Reflecting on the district's history, Harris mentioned that back in 1936, the area relied on a volunteer fire department. Firefighters would receive calls at home and head to the station for gear, often taking between eight to fifteen minutes to get to the scene. The Pingree Grove and Countryside Fire Protection District was established in 1957, adding ambulance services in 1975. Nowadays, the district operates two stations—this newly opened one and another at Plank Road and Route 20—each staffed with three firefighter EMTs. As Fehrman proudly pointed out, compared to earlier times, today’s response times are drastically reduced.
