In recent years, the architecture, engineering, construction, and operations (AECO) industry has seen an unprecedented explosion in data volume and the variety of tools being utilized. This surge highlights the urgent need for robust data infrastructure that supports flexibility and seamless interoperability among users, tools, and throughout the project lifecycle. Today, I’m thrilled to share two significant milestones in our journey toward connecting people and data across this lifecycle: Datum360 has officially joined Autodesk to address the pressing demand for enhanced data connectivity, and our AEC Data Model API is now widely available, granting granular data access to all Autodesk Docs users.
Connecting individuals and data across the project timeline allows AECO firms to design superior solutions and deliver high-quality projects more swiftly, reducing waste and cutting costs. Datum360's acquisition strengthens our ability to bridge existing gaps in data management and extend support for non-model data and compliance reporting. As Steve Wilson, Datum360’s CEO, notes, “Datum360 and Autodesk share a common mission: empowering our customers to turn their data into a competitive edge.â€
Datum360 acts as a robust, reliable data backbone, unifying data scattered across various silos. It empowers AECO stakeholders by enhancing the accessibility of model data beyond design authoring environments. Built on a cloud-based platform, Datum360 enables users to confidently navigate today’s intricate data landscape, facilitating connections, management, and searches in one centralized location.
Key features of Datum360 include a customizable class library for specifying exact data requirements, intelligent data scraping, searching, reporting, and collaboration capabilities, controlled access features with full lifecycle audit trails, and seamless integration of data from diverse sources.
Simultaneously, the introduction of the AEC Data Model API marks a revolutionary shift in how data is accessed—whether via files or granularly, at the fundamental level of a model or file. This API is the first component of our broader granular data ecosystem, the AEC data model, designed to enhance data quality and eliminate bulky file-based data exchanges. Built on Autodesk’s Design and Make Platform, and foundational to the AECO industry cloud, Forma, this open and scalable solution empowers customers to achieve better outcomes for the built environment.
Arcadis, for instance, leverages the AEC Data Model API to enforce powerful standardization across project data. Josha van Reij, Product Manager at Autodesk Construction Cloud, shares, “Using the API, we can extract data from Revit models and centralize it in the cloud, making it accessible across our organization. This has increased our structured project data by 60%, allowing us to derive cross-project insights and deliver automated client reports in a standardized format.â€
The API introduces a common language spanning the entire AECO lifecycle, from design authoring to construction-ready models and operations. Features include direct cloud access to granular design data via GraphQL APIs, property information access for individual Revit elements, and the ability to search across multiple models simultaneously.
Looking ahead, the API will evolve to provide real-time access to additional data types and from other Autodesk products, fostering stakeholder experiences and applications that facilitate smarter decision-making. Additionally, Autodesk Docs is transforming into an open Common Data Environment (CDE), moving beyond cloud-based file management to offer granular data access across all our products. This shift enables collaborators to focus on relevant data points, driving insightful dashboards and better-informed decisions.
While the API represents just the beginning of the AEC data model’s potential, it’s a pivotal step toward democratizing granular data access, previously restricted to a select few technical experts. I’m excited to witness the incredible achievements our customers will unlock by bridging people and data across the project lifecycle.
This announcement naturally comes with the usual caveats about forward-looking statements and the inherent uncertainties in predicting future outcomes. While we anticipate significant benefits from the acquisition, there are risks involved, including the potential for failed integration, competitive challenges, and unforeseen costs. Our plans are aspirational and not guarantees, and purchasing decisions should consider these variables.
