Zhonghai: Improve the operating efficiency of auxiliary machines and reduce fuel consumption

Although the auxiliary machinery on a ship may not be the largest energy consumers, effective management can lead to significant fuel savings. First and foremost, maintaining high-quality fuel and ensuring the machines operate smoothly is essential for improving combustion efficiency. Additionally, consistent daily maintenance and refined operational practices are crucial in keeping equipment running efficiently over time. Modern Ships often use branded engines that allow them to run on low-quality fuel while operating just one auxiliary machine. However, many older vessels built in China during the 1970s and 1980s have outdated auxiliary systems. As a result, these ships frequently need to run two auxiliary machines simultaneously, which increases both maintenance costs and fuel consumption. Under similar loads, using two auxiliary engines can consume up to 15% more fuel than using just one. For example, if a single auxiliary engine consumes 1.8 tons of fuel on a 30,000-ton bulk carrier, running two would consume around 2.2 to 2.7 tons. This means that by operating only one auxiliary engine, a ship could save over 0.4 tons of fuel per day. With an average of 200 sailing days per year, this amounts to approximately 80 tons of fuel saved annually, translating into cost savings of around RMB 360,000. In recent years, CSCL has focused on improving maintenance and management of its aging fleet. Through detailed inspections and targeted repairs, most of the old equipment has been restored to good working condition. Many ships that previously relied on domestic auxiliary engines now only need one unit during navigation, which reduces fuel usage and minimizes wear and tear on the machinery, further lowering spare parts expenses. Of course, safety must always come first, and proper operation is key to avoiding accidents. Despite these improvements, some auxiliary machines still struggle with performance issues and safety concerns. In such cases, Zhonghai has implemented technical upgrades, including replacing or modifying certain components. These changes significantly enhance machine performance, allowing the use of lower-quality fuel without compromising safety. The return on investment from these upgrades is typically achieved within two to three years. For some older domestic units from the 1980s, simple modifications to the fuel system enable them to handle higher viscosity fuels, reducing fuel costs and increasing efficiency. These relatively small-scale upgrades yield substantial economic benefits, making them highly worthwhile.
