Thread milling cutter for machining non-leakage oil pipe thread

In the oil and gas industry, traditional methods like machine taps often lead to thread leakage issues in pipe fittings. To address this challenge, Emuge has introduced two innovative solutions: a solid carbide thread milling cutter and an indexable insert thread milling cutter. These tools are specifically designed for machining NPT/API threads, offering improved efficiency, accuracy, and durability. The solid carbide thread milling cutter features a spiral groove design, making it ideal for processing NPT/API threads with diameters ranging from 0.125′′ to 2′′ (3–50 mm). On the other hand, the indexable insert thread milling cutter, which uses an incomplete profile, is suitable for larger diameter threads, covering sizes from 1′′ to 20′′ (25–500 mm). These new tools significantly expand the capabilities of Emuge’s Thread-Max and Threads-All threading systems. Emuge’s solid carbide thread milling cutters are made with micro-grained carbide grades and TiCN coatings, which enhance tool life and performance. The multi-spiral groove design helps eliminate chatter during machining, ensuring smooth and precise operations. Additionally, the tool’s construction combines large diameters with accurate thread profile corrections, allowing for high-precision threading and longer thread lengths—especially important for API pipe connections. For the indexable insert thread milling cutters, which are used for tapered threads, the design includes hardened steel bodies with Weldon-style shanks or integral CAT50 shanks in three stem sizes. These cutters are internally cooled, with coolant directed radially from the cutting edge of the insert to optimize cooling and chip evacuation, ultimately improving thread quality and extending tool life. The inserts themselves are manufactured from fine-grain cemented carbide and come with either TiN or TiAlN coatings for enhanced wear resistance. The blade’s front and back angles are engineered to handle heavy chip loads per tooth, while its shape allows for free cutting, reducing radial cutting forces and ensuring greater accuracy. Each blade features four usable cutting edges, maximizing tool life and cost efficiency. Moreover, the tool holders are precisely machined on the steel end face of the tool body, ensuring accurate blade positioning and consistent performance. This level of precision makes these thread milling cutters a reliable choice for demanding applications in the oil and gas sector.
