The current situation and development trend of papermaking machinery industry in China
Papermaking machinery encompasses specialized equipment such as pulping, papermaking, and finishing systems, along with general-purpose tools like electrical transmission, automation, computer control, and environmental protection technologies. The industry is highly technical, involving a wide range of fields including mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials science, corrosion resistance, pressure vessel design, and automatic control. This complexity makes the sector both challenging and essential in the broader manufacturing landscape.
China's massive demand for paper has created significant opportunities for the development of papermaking machinery. By the end of the Tenth Five-Year Plan, China’s paper and paperboard output was expected to reach 38–40 million tons, with new production capacity reaching 8–10 million tons. However, domestic production capabilities could only meet less than one-third of this demand. In 1995, the average scale of paper mills was around 100,000 tons, with only 16 units, but by 2000, this had grown to 44. Despite this growth, the development of papermaking machinery companies remained slow, struggling to keep up with the rising needs of the industry.
Domestic paper mills often prioritize price, technology, reliability, and after-sales service when selecting machinery. Companies with more financial resources—such as foreign-owned enterprises, joint ventures, or those receiving national loan discounts—tend to have higher expectations and often opt to import key equipment. These customers represent a minority, while the majority are private or joint-stock enterprises that emerged after China's economic reforms. Though some have financial strength, they are hesitant to invest heavily in imported equipment and seek better quality at reasonable prices, which drives the growth of domestic machinery manufacturers.
Despite progress in recent years, the domestic papermaking machinery industry still faces several challenges. While some sectors like aviation and shipbuilding have entered the field, leading to improved product quality and innovation, the industry remains fragmented. Key issues include product homogenization, excessive competition, low profit margins, unstable performance, and low technical standards. Most domestic products are low-end, with limited differentiation, and high-end equipment is still largely dependent on imports.
The main reasons behind these issues include insufficient investment, lack of technological innovation, reliance on imported equipment, and weak R&D capabilities. Additionally, most domestic developments are based on imitation rather than independent innovation, limiting long-term competitiveness.
Looking ahead, several technical areas show promising trends. Continuous cooking systems are becoming more common as pulp production scales up, with many domestic solutions now available. Washing, screening, and bleaching systems have also seen improvements, though imported equipment still holds an edge in precision and durability. Waste paper processing systems are developing rapidly, driven by increased use of recycled fibers. Paper machines and coating equipment are advancing, but there is still a gap in speed, efficiency, and performance compared to foreign counterparts.
To address these challenges, the industry must focus on strategic development. Improving funding mechanisms, enhancing talent training, expanding international markets, and refining market positioning through collaboration are all critical steps. Strengthening R&D, investing in advanced technologies, and fostering partnerships will be essential for the long-term growth and competitiveness of China’s papermaking machinery sector.
