Ukrainian President Vows to Support Delfast's E-Bike Factory in Kyiv Region
On October 21, 2020, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Unit City in Kyiv, Ukraine, to engage with local residents and assess their well-being during the ongoing pandemic. During his visit, he had the opportunity to see the Delfast electric bike for the first time and was immediately impressed by the innovation.
Zelensky expressed strong support for the company’s vision and pledged to help establish an e-bike manufacturing facility in the Kyiv region. This announcement came as a major boost to Delfast, which has been working hard to expand its operations and promote sustainable transportation in Ukraine.
Founders Daniel Tonkopiy and Serhii Denysenko were thrilled to present their product to the president. They shared how Delfast’s sales had surged 4–5 times during the lockdown, reflecting a growing public interest in eco-friendly and safe alternatives to traditional transport. The founders also highlighted the increasing trend of people switching from cars and unreliable public transit to bicycles and electric bikes.
During the meeting, Tonkopiy pointed out one of the key obstacles facing cyclists in Ukraine: the lack of proper bike infrastructure. He noted that few cities, including Kyiv, have adequate cycling paths. The president acknowledged the issue but admitted that no real action had been taken so far to address it.
The conversation then turned to Delfast’s production challenges. While the company currently manufactures its bikes in China, the founders expressed a desire to move production to Ukraine and sought government assistance. Zelensky responded positively, stating, “I am ready to support the production of e-bikes in Ukraine.â€
He suggested that a location near Kyiv, such as Bila Tserkva, would be ideal for the new factory, about 80 km from the capital. The proposal sparked some light-hearted comments from the audience, with one person joking that the president would now act as Delfast’s personal investor.
This meeting marked a turning point for Delfast and could significantly impact the future of e-mobility in Ukraine. With government backing, the company is now on a stronger path to bring more green technology to the country and improve urban mobility for all.
