In a remarkable engineering achievement, Bunting has delivered the largest Electro Crossbelt (Overband) Magnet ever built. Installed at a gold mine in Northern Finland, this massive 13-ton magnet is designed to protect critical processing equipment by removing tramp metal from 2.7 million tons of ore over the next year.

The system uses powerful magnetic fields to lift and separate ferrous metals from the ore as it moves along the conveyor. Suspended across the non-magnetic head pulley, the magnet ensures that any unwanted metal is caught on a self-cleaning belt and safely removed from the process stream.

This advanced magnet is part of a major expansion at the Kittila Gold Mine, highlighting Bunting's expertise in custom solutions for complex mining environments.

Bunting engineers worked closely with mine operators to develop a tailored design that met the specific needs of the site. Factors like conveyor size, material flow, and metal types were all taken into account during the planning phase.

Using an in-house selection program, the team calculated the ideal magnetic field strength and force density needed for efficient separation. The final product, the model 205 OCW50, features a 17 kW electromagnetic coil cooled by recirculated oil, ensuring consistent performance even under heavy load.

The magnet is installed above a 1600mm-wide conveyor operating at a 12° incline and 0.75m/sec speed. It handles ore particles ranging from 70mm to 400mm, with throughput between 450 and 765 tons per hour. Tramp metal includes items like steel rebar, cable bolts, and broken drill bits.
