Electro Crossbelt Magnet Safeguards Gold Mine Operations
In a major engineering achievement, Bunting has successfully installed the world’s largest Electro Crossbelt (Overband) Magnet at a gold mine in Northern Finland. This massive device, weighing 13 tons, is set to protect critical processing equipment by removing harmful tramp metal from over 2.7 million tons of ore annually.
The Electro Crossbelt Magnet uses powerful magnetic fields to detect and extract ferrous materials as they pass through the conveyor system. Suspended across the non-magnetic head pulley, it lifts any metal debris and transports it away via a self-cleaning belt. This ensures that crushers, screens, and other vital machinery remain protected from damage caused by foreign objects.
This advanced magnet is part of a major expansion at the Kittila Gold Mine, designed specifically for the site’s unique conditions.
Bunting engineers worked closely with mine operators to develop a tailored solution. They considered factors such as conveyor dimensions, material flow, and the types of tramp metal present. Using an internal selection program, they optimized the magnetic field strength and configuration to ensure maximum efficiency.
The final product is the model 205 OCW50 Electro Crossbelt Magnet, featuring a 17 kW electromagnetic coil cooled by recirculated oil. This cooling system is essential for maintaining consistent performance, as excessive heat can weaken the magnetic force. The magnet was manufactured at Bunting’s Redditch facility and measures 4.2 meters in length, 3 meters in width, and 2.2 meters in height.
The system is positioned above a 1600mm-wide conveyor operating at a 12° incline and 0.75m/sec speed. The ore being transported ranges from 70mm to 400mm in size, with throughput between 450 and 765 tons per hour. The magnet is capable of handling up to 500mm of material spread and can lift tramp metal from a working gap of 600mm.
Tramp metal includes items like steel rebar, cable bolts, steel mesh, and broken drill bits. The high-force density of the magnet ensures these materials are effectively removed before they reach downstream equipment.
Adrian Coleman, General Manager of Bunting’s Redditch facility, said: “This project was one of our most complex to date. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, we managed to complete the design and manufacturing process efficiently. It's a testament to our team's dedication and expertise.â€
