Alpha-acetolactate decarboxylase won the National Science and Technology Progress Award

On January 8th, the National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in Beijing, where the "Research and Application of High-Activity α-Acetolactate Decarboxylase" project from Nanning was honored with the Second Prize of the 2007 National Science and Technology Progress Award. This marked a historic moment for Nanning, as it was the first time that the city's scientific achievements had been recognized at this prestigious national level. The award represented a major milestone in the region’s technological innovation journey. This breakthrough successfully challenged the international dominance of Danish company Novozymes, establishing Nanning as a leading force in domestic enzyme production. The development helped China's beer industry reduce its reliance on imported products and positioned α-acetolactate decarboxylase as a key player in biotechnology within the country. Alpha-acetolactate decarboxylase (ALDC) is a crucial enzyme used in the beer brewing process. It significantly reduces fermentation time, enhances yield, and improves the quality of the final product. The project was spearheaded by the Nanning Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology, in collaboration with Nang Bongke Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Guangxi University, and Nanning Zhongnuo Bioengineering Co., Ltd. Since its inception, the project has received widespread recognition. In 2001, it was selected as one of the six outstanding industrialized projects from South China to participate in the 15th Anniversary Exhibition of the National 863 Program. By 2006, it had already won the First Prize of the Nanning City and Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Award. The research began in 1997 when ALDC was included in the National 863 Program. In 2000, it was added to the National Torch Program. By 2005, the national standard for ALDC was established, reaching an advanced international level. The technology was patented, giving China full intellectual property rights over the enzyme. Today, the project produces 60 tons annually, generating cumulative output value of 72.96 million yuan and contributing 7.86 million yuan in taxes. It has become the largest domestic manufacturer of α-acetolactate decarboxylase, filling a critical gap in the market. The technology has been widely adopted by over 150 beer companies across China, enhancing the competitiveness of the nation's beer industry and playing a vital role in its growth and development. This achievement not only highlights Nanning’s scientific progress but also showcases the power of innovation in driving economic and industrial advancement.
