On January 8th, during the National Science and Technology Awards Conference held in Beijing, the "Research and Application of High-Activity α-Acetolactate Decarboxylase" project from Nanning was honored with the second prize for the 2007 National Science and Technology Progress Award. This marked a historic moment as it was the first time that Nanning's scientific and technological achievements received such national recognition. The award signifies a major breakthrough in the city's efforts to promote technological innovation. The project successfully challenged the international dominance of Danish company Novozymes, establishing itself as a leading domestic enzyme producer. It helped China's beer industry reduce reliance on imported products and positioned "α-acetolactate decarboxylase" at the forefront of biotechnology in the country. Alpha-acetolactate decarboxylase is a key enzyme used in the beer brewing process. It plays a crucial role in shortening fermentation time, increasing yield, and enhancing the quality of the final product. The project was led by the Nanning Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology and involved collaboration with several companies, including Nang Bongke Biotechnology Co., Ltd., Guangxi University, and Nanning Zhongnuo Bioengineering Co., Ltd. In 2001, the project was recognized as one of the six outstanding industrialization achievements from South China provinces under the National 863 Program. It also won the first prize in both the Nanning City and Guangxi Science and Technology Progress Awards in 2006. The development of α-acetolactate decarboxylase began in 1997 when it was included in the National 863 Program. By 2000, it was further supported through the National Torch Program. In 2005, the national standard for ALDC (alpha-acetolactate decarboxylase) was established, reaching an advanced international level. The technology was patented, ensuring independent intellectual property rights. To date, the project has achieved an annual output of 60 tons, generating cumulative production value of 72.96 million yuan and paying 7.86 million yuan in taxes. It has become the largest domestic manufacturer of this enzyme, filling a critical gap in the market. The technology has been widely adopted by over 150 beer companies across China, significantly boosting the competitiveness of the nation's beer industry. This achievement not only demonstrates the power of local innovation but also highlights the growing influence of Chinese science and technology on the global stage.
