It’s that time of year again… According to Larry Shapiro, the RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning regarding brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, reports came in about additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Fire crews from Buffalo Grove were also responding to blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22.
The railroad immediately halted all train traffic through the area and ordered a recently passed train to stop for inspection. Fortunately, all the fires were brought under control within approximately 90 minutes. Here are some of the most striking images from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road.
