This is from Larry Shapiro:
It's that time of year again... The RED Center received multiple calls late Monday morning about brush fires near the Union Pacific railroad tracks in Wheeling, stretching from 444 Carpenter Street all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, they were also responding to additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District, near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Fire crews in Buffalo Grove were also dealing with blazes near the tracks as far north as Route 22.
The railroad halted all train traffic through the area and had a recently passed train stop for inspection. Fortunately, all the fires were under control within approximately 90 minutes. Here are some of the most striking images from the largest fire, which occurred behind 250 Carpenter Street, just south of Dundee Road.

More photos are available in a gallery on shapirophotography.net. It was a busy day for firefighters, and it's a reminder of how quickly these fires can spread, especially with the wind. Stay safe and keep an eye on local alerts if you live near open areas or rail lines.
