Elios 3 vs. Elios 2: How do the Flyability drones compare?

With the Elios 2 drone reaching its end of life, this is the perfect opportunity to upgrade to the Elios 3. In this article, we highlight the differences and key benefits of the two drone solutions to help you make an informed decision.

What Elios 2 and Elios 3 Have in Common

    Designed for the Same Purpose

Elios 2 and Elios 3 are both built for remote-controlled close-up inspections in hazardous and confined spaces. Both models share the same core vision: to keep workers out of dangerous areas while delivering high-quality inspection data. They offer similar benefits such as:

    • Keeping personnel safe by avoiding dangerous environments.
    • Providing detailed visual data to support critical maintenance decisions.
    • Reducing downtime and operational costs through efficient inspections.

Both drones are engineered to withstand collisions, thanks to Flyability’s patented collision-resilient technology. This allows them to bounce off obstacles and continue flying without damage, making them ideal for tight or unpredictable spaces.

    Collision-Resilient Technology

The Elios 2 and Elios 3 use a unique combination of motors and flight controllers that can reverse thrust instantly. This enables the drone to recover from a crash or a flip, ensuring uninterrupted operation even in challenging environments.

    High-Quality Inspection Payload

Both drones come with a built-in payload that includes a 4K camera, advanced lighting system, and distance lock functionality. The 4K camera captures images at 0.18 mm/px resolution at 30 cm, providing clarity comparable to what an inspector would see up close. The oblique lighting system mimics how human inspectors use flashlights to detect surface imperfections. The automatic distance lock helps maintain consistent inspection distances, especially when inspecting welds or beams.

Differences Between the Elios 2 and Elios 3

While the Elios 2 has proven itself over the years, the Elios 3 represents a significant step forward. It introduces new technologies like LiDAR, real-time situational awareness, and modular payloads, making it more versatile and powerful than its predecessor.

New Features in the Elios 3

The Elios 3 offers several improvements, including:

    • Easier to pilot: With improved stabilization, it's easier for pilots of all skill levels to operate.
    • Live 3D mapping: Real-time 3D visualization helps pilots navigate and assess areas effectively.
    • Survey-grade LiDAR: Enables precise point cloud generation for detailed mapping of hazardous areas.
    • Ultrasonic thickness measurements: Provides accurate readings of material thickness in hard-to-reach places.
    • Modular design: Supports a range of additional payloads, expanding the drone's capabilities.

    Survey-Grade Mapping Capabilities

The Elios 3 is equipped with a powerful LiDAR sensor, allowing for highly accurate point cloud data. This makes it possible to map large areas, even in GPS-denied environments. The Surveying Payload (Ouster OS0-128 Rev 7) provides precision down to ±1.0 cm and ±0.1% drift, making it ideal for complex structures like underground mines or industrial facilities.

    Ultrasonic Thickness Measurement (UT)

The UT payload, developed with Cygnus Instruments, allows the Elios 3 to take thickness measurements in hard-to-reach areas. These measurements are integrated into the 3D point cloud, making it easier to locate and report on defects.

    Real-Time Situational Awareness

Using FlyAware™ SLAM technology and onboard LiDAR, the Elios 3 creates a real-time 3D map of its surroundings. Pilots can track the drone’s position and trajectory, helping them navigate safely and efficiently during missions.

    3D Live Reporting

With Inspector 5 software, users can visualize Points of Interest (POIs) on a 3D map, making it easier to analyze and report on inspection results. This feature supports better decision-making and maintenance planning.

    Designed for the Future

The Elios 3 has two payload ports, one for LiDAR and another for custom modules. This flexibility allows for future upgrades, such as the RAD payload for radiation detection, which was released in May 2023. Additional payloads, like the Surveying and Ultrasonic Thickness modules, are also available, showing the platform’s potential for expansion.

New Use Cases for the Elios 3

The Elios 3 opens up new possibilities for industries that rely on inspections in dangerous or hard-to-reach locations. Some of the new applications include:

    Mapping Hazardous Areas

Whether it's a collapsed building or an underground mine, the Elios 3 can create detailed 3D maps without putting humans at risk. Its collision resilience and LiDAR allow it to navigate complex environments and capture high-resolution scans.

    Indoor Volume Tracking

The Elios 3 can measure large stockpiles with millimeter accuracy, improving inventory management and reducing safety risks associated with unstable piles. This is particularly useful in industries like cement production, where precise tracking is essential.

    Georeferencing and Data Alignment

By overlaying LiDAR data onto existing maps, the Elios 3 helps professionals identify hazards, monitor structural changes, and improve long-term planning. This is especially valuable for monitoring infrastructure and updating records in dynamic environments.
