According to US media reports, Chrysler is planning to introduce an eight-speed transmission for its six cars and trucks and a nine-speed transmission for all its front-wheel drive models.
It is reported that the company has begun assembling its new equipment and trained employees of three factories in Kokomo. By the end of this year, Chrysler will begin production of an eight-speed transmission and begin production of a nine-speed transmission early next year.
It is understood that these transmissions were developed in cooperation with the German car supplier ZF Group and the company, which aims to help improve the fuel economy of Chrysler trucks and SUV models. The eight-speed transmission can increase fuel economy by 25% in 2014, but the company expects to meet the government's target of 35.5 miles per gallon for 2016 average fuel economy.
Currently, Chrysler supplies an eight-speed transmission for the Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger full-size cars. The transmission is produced in Germany and supplied by the ZF Group. In addition to these two models, Chrysler also plans to have an eight-speed transmission on the Jeep Wrangler, Ram, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Challenger models. The nine-speed transmission will be equipped on the Chrysler 200.
