The high-tension electrostatic plate separator (HTP) consists of a curved, inclined, electrically grounded plate where the feed material is introduced. As particles move over the surface under gravity, they interact with the electric field generated between the static and grounded electrodes. Conductive particles become charged through induction, while non-conductive ones remain uncharged. The static electrode then attracts the charged conductors, lifting them off the grounded plate and separating them from the non-conductive materials. This difference in trajectory leads to effective mineral separation.
One of the earliest commercial electrostatic separators featured a sloping plate made of thin sheet metal, either straight or curved. These plates were arranged at an angle to allow free movement of granular material under an active electric field. In this setup, conductive particles—especially fine grains—were attracted toward the charged electrode, while larger non-conductive particles were rejected. This mechanism contrasts with that of a high-tension roll separator, which typically separates fine non-conductors from coarse conductors.
To optimize performance, many mineral sand processing flowsheets combine high-tension roll separators as primary roughers, followed by plate-type separators for final cleaning. This integrated approach ensures higher recovery rates and improved product quality. The HTP system is known for its reliability, low operating costs, and effectiveness in handling fine particle separations, making it a valuable tool in modern mineral processing plants.
