One hurt at Schaumburg 2-11 fire in a 7-story apartment building

The Schaumburg Fire Department was alerted by an automatic fire alarm before 6 a.m. on Saturday, followed by multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting smoke at 1234 Valley Lake Drive. Engine 54 arrived first and connected to the standpipe system. Firefighters found residents in the lobby and on upper-floor balconies of the seven-story building. Upon reaching the fire floor, they encountered heavy smoke and had to locate the unit that was on fire. An 85-year-old resident of the affected apartment suffered second-degree burns to her chest and was transported to St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates before being transferred to Loyola University Hospital’s burn center for further treatment. Two fire lines were deployed, allowing crews to contain the fire to the unit of origin. The incident escalated to a 2-11 alarm with four additional ambulances dispatched as a precaution. Firefighters rescued several residents who had taken refuge on their balconies to escape the smoke. Larry Shapiro captured several images of the scene, including shots of Engine 52 arriving with Ambulance 52, Battalion 5, and Truck 52. Additional photos showed firefighters bringing equipment into the building, the fire located on the fourth-floor rear of the structure, and investigators examining the unit before completing the overhaul. Other images featured firefighters resting on the seventh-floor balcony after a secondary search, command posts with mutual aid units, and Engine 54 charging the standpipe system. A broken water pipe caused flooding near the pump room, affecting both interior and exterior areas. Ambulances from Schaumburg and mutual aid agencies were staged nearby. Mutual aid companies included Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, Itasca, Mount Prospect, Palatine, Rolling Meadows, Palatine Rural, Buffalo Grove, Barrington, and Bloomingdale. Chief officers from Arlington Heights, Palatine Rural, and Itasca also responded. The Chicago Tribune covered the incident, noting the critical condition of the injured woman and the extent of damage on the fourth floor, which left 15 residents displaced and assisted by the Red Cross. Additional photos and radio traffic are available online, with detailed audio recordings from Radioman911.com and St. Charles Feed. These provide insight into the dispatch and on-scene coordination during the two-alarm high-rise apartment fire.
