Intel has been working on VLC research since 2008, and Roberts is looking to develop this technology as a communication platform between cars and cars. VLC is a cheaper option than any new car equipped with radar or laser. While radars and lasers are more efficient ways to make cars aware of the surrounding conditions, they are also an expensive way in price-sensitive markets. To make a basic viable mesh network solution, cars running at least 10 roads need to be equipped with radar or laser systems. VLC relies on line-of-sight, which is a disadvantage compared to radar or wireless networks, because harsh weather and ambient lighting conditions can interfere with LED flashing, which makes VLC less a spontaneous drive technology solution. feasible.
