An explosion occurred near Rockton, Illinois, at a Chemtool chemical plant around 7 a.m. The smoke has been drifting south and southeast, raising concerns among local residents.

Approximately 40 to 45 emergency agencies from northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin have been involved in the response, but efforts to contain the fire have proven difficult so far.

Chemtool is known for producing industrial lubricants. About 70 employees were evacuated before firefighters arrived. Fortunately, no one was injured, though a firefighter sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the company has had no compliance violations in the past three years.

Initial air quality tests show that ground-level conditions are safe, but authorities have opted for a precautionary evacuation of the area. Firefighters have halted water operations to prevent potential environmental damage, as runoff could contaminate a nearby river. Instead, they are allowing the oil-based product to burn off over the coming days.

A mandatory evacuation has been issued for all residents and businesses within a one-mile radius of 1165 Prairie Hill Road. Local drivers are being advised to avoid the area to ensure safety and minimize traffic congestion.

 

The situation remains under close monitoring by officials, who are working with local communities to provide updates and support during this ongoing event.
