Everyone knows GPS, for the role of navigation in the outdoors, but for indoors? But other technologies are needed. At its Google I/O Developers Conference, Google announced a new technology for visual positioning services (VPS) that uses augmented reality phones and tablets to help navigate the indoor location mapping system.
Imagine holding your cell phone, guiding you to walk in the direction of rotation, and getting you on the right aisles and detailed shelves where you want.
Google said that VPS uses machine learning, computer vision and mapping coordinates to do this. All this sounds good, but until we see it in practice, it is hard to say how accurate the VPS is.
With the audio interface, Google said that VPS can help visually impaired people in the way they had difficulties before. VPS builds on the Tango platform and begins experimenting with its indoor map navigation.
