Here's a report from Eric Haak about a fire he responded to on Saturday afternoon in Chicago's 23rd Battalion. The incident occurred around 1:30 PM at a vacant 25x40 two-flat building located on the 7200 block of South Constance. The fire was on the second floor, and it quickly became clear that access would be challenging due to the narrow streets and dense tree coverage surrounding the area.
The companies involved included Engine 126 and Truck 49, along with Engine 72 and Tower Ladder 34. Truck 16 and Battalion 17 were assigned as Rapid Intervention Team (RIT). Despite the difficult conditions, the fire was brought under control relatively quickly, but crews had to perform extensive overhaul work, keeping them on scene for over an hour. Notably, Engine 126 was using Engine 56 as a backup rig during the operation.
Eric captured several photos of the incident, showing the fire and the response efforts. These images provide a visual record of the situation and the firefighters' work on the scene. It’s always valuable to have real-time accounts like this to better understand what happens during these types of emergencies.
