This morning at around 9 a.m., a significant fire broke out at the Gerresheimer Glass Co. located at 1131 Arnold Street in Chicago Heights. According to reports from nwi.com, no injuries were reported during the incident.
Chicago Heights Fire Chief James Angell stated that the fire initially started due to a malfunctioning furnace that began leaking molten glass, resembling lava, across the facility. Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters quickly doused the furnace with water. However, a steam explosion occurred on the third floor, propelling the molten glass onto the structure and igniting a larger blaze. It took firefighters approximately 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. After extinguishing the flames, crews stayed on site to assist plant personnel in restarting the furnace to prevent the molten glass from solidifying. The plant, which has been operational since the early 1900s, specializes in producing primary glass packaging for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Chief Angell mentioned that due to the harsh weather conditions and the size of the factory, additional support was requested from neighboring fire departments. This included assistance from Matteson, Park Forest, Glenwood, Homewood, Flossmoor, Sauk Village, Frankfort, Steger, and Hazel Crest firefighters. Meanwhile, Crete, Richton Park, Crete Township, University Park, and Richton Park Township fire departments helped handle incoming calls for service.
Attached are several photos taken by Tim Olk, offering a glimpse into the intensity of the situation. These images capture the winter landscape and the efforts made to contain the fire at this industrial building. Despite the challenges posed by the cold weather and the scale of the factory, the firefighters managed to keep the situation under control and ensured the safety of everyone involved.
