Beware of These 3 Common Garage Door Scams
Over the past year, we’ve shared information about some of the common garage door scams being run by less-than-reputable installers. Unfortunately, the garage door industry presents an attractive opportunity for scammers because it’s largely unregulated. It’s also easy to source parts and materials, and many homeowners only need to deal with this issue infrequently.
Even the cheapest garage door, hastily installed, will typically function for several years. This gives unscrupulous operators ample time to move on to new ventures under different names, leaving customers with subpar installations.
Given these factors, it’s crucial to be vigilant when purchasing or repairing a garage door. There are several scams you should watch out for, and we’ve outlined three of them below.

Three Garage Door Scams You Should Know About
In addition to the scams we’ve previously discussed, here are three more that are currently active in the Toronto and GTA areas.
1. Discounted Service Calls
One scam to watch out for is the low-priced service call. This tactic is often used by unscrupulous operators when you're in need of emergency repairs. A recent example we encountered was a "100% Guaranteed" $19.00 24-hour garage door repair service. The Google listing suggests that the service will only cost $19. However, once the technician arrives, they will demand additional payment before beginning any work. Always verify the full cost upfront before agreeing to any service.
2. Misleading Coupons
Many companies advertise online coupons offering discounted prices on garage doors. However, they often fail to mention that the coupon does not include installation costs. You might think you’re getting a great deal on the door itself, only to find yourself paying significantly more for installation. Always ask potential contractors to provide detailed quotes that clearly outline what is and isn’t covered.
3. Impersonating Reputable Companies
We’ve unfortunately fallen victim to similar scams ourselves. As a well-known and trusted garage door installer in Whitby, we’ve had other companies masquerade as us to deceive unsuspecting customers. Be sure to scrutinize website URLs, business cards, and any correspondence carefully to ensure they match the company you believe you’re working with. Alternatively, you can skip the hassle entirely and contact us directly at Whitby Garage Doors – we’re the real deal!
