Antioch buys 2nd used ambulance

The Lake County News Sun recently covered the Antioch Fire Department’s decision to purchase a used ambulance from the Town of Paris. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce costs and increase independence in emergency medical services (EMS) operations. The village is currently evaluating its options for renewing its EMS contract with Superior Air-Ground Ambulance Services, which was signed after terminating the previous agreement with Antioch Rescue Squad on May 31. The current contract, set to expire on November 30, includes a turn-key service that provides two fully-equipped ambulances staffed by two state-certified paramedics around the clock at the village’s fire stations. Fire Chief John Nixon highlighted that purchasing a second-hand ambulance could significantly cut expenses. The department recently acquired a 2000 International ambulance with only 22,000 miles on the odometer for $20,000. According to Nixon, this is a smart investment that helps the department move away from leasing and toward owning its equipment. "This is an excellent deal," he said. "It will save us a lot of money over time." Currently, the village leases one ambulance for about $53,000 per year. By equipping the new used ambulance, the cost would be approximately $35,000 as a one-time expense, offering long-term savings. The goal is to eventually own three ambulances, with one serving as a backup. Nixon mentioned that another used ambulance may soon become available, allowing the department to plan ahead financially. In addition to the recent purchase, the village already has an ambulance donated by the state Foreign Fire Insurance Tax Board in June. It was bought from Winnetka with 55,000 miles on it. These donations are part of a state law requiring funds from out-of-state fire insurance companies to support local fire departments. Nixon also noted that the department received two donated Lifepak monitors/defibrillators from the local Antioch Firefighters Association. These will be used in the ambulances to enhance patient care. A brand-new ambulance can cost around $220,000, but the used one is being funded through the village's capital budget designated for the fire department. Nixon believes the limited market for used equipment makes this purchase even more valuable. Looking ahead, the department aims to eliminate one leased ambulance in the next contract cycle and eventually remove the need for leasing altogether. However, Nixon emphasized that they're not yet ready to hire full-time firefighter-paramedics to replace the outside contractor. Currently, Superior responds to calls within the village, while Antioch Rescue Squad serves the unincorporated areas of Antioch Township under a separate contract. The integration of EMS services between the village and the First Fire District is still under discussion, as both entities work toward potential consolidation. Thanks, Ron.

Hot Melt Adhesive For Paper Packaging

Shipping cartons must be able to withstand temperature, humidity changes and rough handling, but the use of tape is more difficult to meet this requirement, because of its poor bonding strength, low tensile strength, and for coated or oily cardboard is not strong.

The hot melt adhesive has a good bonding force with the wet material, strong penetration, and plays a physical and chemical bonding role between the corrugated paper and the lined paper board. The overall strength of the carton after bonding is enhanced, and the carton is not easy to deform and crack. In addition, the hot melt adhesive coating system can be applied to a variety of different shapes of the key parts, such as: carton folding lid.

Second, the low temperature resistance of the self-adhesive tape is poor, in the cold climate in the north, easy to open the glue; Hot melt adhesive has good low temperature resistance, can withstand -40℃ low temperature. Moreover, the storage period of hot melt adhesive is up to 2 years, the storage area is small, and there is no special storage requirements; The validity period of tape storage is only half a year, and certain storage conditions are also required, otherwise it is easy to deteriorate.

Hot melt adhesive also provides a good anti-theft function, as the adhesive penetrates into the corrugated, any attempt to open the carton will tear the fibers. The tape can be cut with a knife, unknowingly removing the contents and sealing them again.
