The world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train is the new energy development direction

According to the latest foreign technology news reports, Alstom has launched the world's first hydrogen-powered passenger train, which will officially start operations in Germany at the end of next year.

The train, called Coradia iLint, runs much quieter than a regular train because it drives a hydrogen-powered fuel cell. The train's fuel tank is on top of the roof, and the hydrogen energy it stores is responsible for driving the battery inside the car to generate electricity. Alstom said it hopes its hydrogen-powered trains will replace fossil fuel diesel locomotives still in use in many parts of Europe.

Hydrogen-powered fuel cells are powered by the most abundant light-weight elemental hydrogen in the universe. The chemical energy stored in fuel (hydrogen) and oxidant (oxygen) is directly converted into electrical energy by electrochemical reaction through a fuel cell (FC). The process does not involve combustion, no mechanical loss, energy conversion rate can be as high as 80%, the product is only electricity, heat and water vapor; and the operation is stable, no vibration and noise.

At the end of 2017, the car will officially operate on the line in Lower Saarsen, Germany, and the state's transportation department announced that they have ordered 14 of these trains. At the moment, related testing and verification work is underway.

In fact, hydrogen fuel cells are a direction of new energy development. In the automotive field, it is the most powerful competitor of electric vehicles. This technology is more popular in Japan.

In the field of trains, in addition to hydrogen energy, super high-speed rail also has great potential. Previously, Germany's largest railway operator, the German Federal Railways, said it would work with HTT, one of the super-high-speed rail contractors, to bring new technology to its own train fleet.
