Scientists at the University of Rochester have found a way to use a cheap and easily available lens to hide large objects in sight, which appears to have emerged from the Harry Potter fantasy series. "A lot of people have been working in different aspects of optical invisibility for years," said John Howell, a professor of physics at the University of New York's Northern Territory, on Friday.

Previous camouflaging methods have become complicated, expensive, and cannot view three-dimensional hidden objects from different perspectives, they said. "As far as we know, this is the first time the invisible device can provide three-dimensional, continuous and multi-directional camouflage," said graduate student Joseph Cui, who helped develop the method in Rochester, which is known for its optical research.
In their tests, the researchers had invisible hands, a face and a ruler, making each object “invisible†while the image behind the hidden object remained in the view. The impact on discovery is endless, they say. "I think this may be used to cover up the back of the truck's upper semi truck so that the driver can see him directly behind him," he said. "It can be used in surgery, interior design, art, etc."
