Hyundai Heavy Industries successfully developed nitrogen oxide removal system

Hyundai Heavy Industries has pioneered the development of a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) NOx removal system for marine engines in Korea and has been certified by Korea Classification Society.
It is reported that the system sprays ammonia into the exhaust gas of the engine and chemically reacts with nitrogen oxides in the catalytic region to decompose the nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water that are harmless to the human body. According to data provided by Hyundai Heavy Industries, the system can reduce exhaust gas losses by approximately 40% and reduce nitrogen oxides by more than 95% in large marine engine exhaust.
As a global shipbuilding and engine manufacturing giant, Hyundai Heavy Industries claims to be the first Korean to successfully complete the performance test of the system on board. By the time IMO's Tier-III is in force, all newbuildings must be equipped with a nitrogen oxide removal system, which is expected to reach billions of dollars.
