From the MABAS Illinois Facebook page:
We are deeply saddened to share this update:
Firefighter/Paramedic Paul Miller's condition remains unchanged—he is still on life support, and medical professionals have determined that recovery is no longer possible. In accordance with Paul’s own wishes, his family has made the heartbreaking decision to withdraw life support.
In keeping with Paul’s generous spirit and his expressed desire to give back, several of his organs will be donated to help others. His gift of life will continue through the lives of those who receive his organs. The donation process may take between 36 to 72 hours, as it involves multiple steps including matching, coordination, and preparation.
Today, Tuesday, April 23rd at 4:00 PM, a special flag ceremony will take place at the main hospital flagpole of Advocate Condell Medical Center, located at 801 S. Milwaukee Ave in Libertyville. A "Gift of Hope" flag will be raised in honor of Paul’s selfless act of organ donation. The brief ceremony will be led by Chaplain David Haley from the Des Plaines Fire Department. All available personnel are encouraged to attend.
The organ donation process is complex and can vary in timing depending on various factors such as recipient matching and medical readiness. It is expected to take more than 24 hours from now (1:00 PM on Tuesday). We will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Sincerely, Alan Wax, Fire Chief, Des Plaines Fire Department Tony Huemann, Fire Chief, McHenry Township Fire Protection District
