Chinese Academy of Sciences: Shanghai Silicate Institute developed a new high temperature resistant lithium ion battery separator

    Lithium-ion batteries have been widely used in portable electronic devices such as notebook computers, mobile phones, and digital cameras. Battery separator is a key material to ensure battery safety and affect battery performance. It plays a role in preventing positive and negative electrode contact, preventing battery short circuit and transmitting ions. The thermal stability of the diaphragm determines the temperature range of battery operation and battery safety. . At present, commercial lithium-ion battery separators are mainly polyolefin-based organic separators, which have the advantages of low price, good mechanical properties, and good electrochemical stability. The disadvantage is that the porosity is low and the wettability to the electrolyte is poor. Poor thermal stability may cause short-circuit of the battery. In severe cases, it may cause fire or explosion, and there are potential safety hazards.

    Recently, the team led by Zhu Yingjie, a researcher at the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the team led by Hu Xianluo, a professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, have developed a research on the new inorganic refractory paper of hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowires. A novel hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high temperature lithium ion battery separator, the battery separator has many advantages, such as high flexibility, good mechanical strength, high porosity, excellent electrolyte wetting and adsorption performance, and thermal stability High performance, high temperature resistance, flame retardant and fire resistance, maintaining its structural integrity at 700 °C. The battery assembled by the novel hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high temperature battery separator has better electrochemical performance, cycle stability and rate performance than the battery assembled by the polypropylene diaphragm. More importantly, the battery assembled with hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high temperature battery separator has excellent thermal stability, can withstand high temperature, can maintain normal working condition in high temperature environment of 150 °C, and light small bulb A battery assembled with a polypropylene diaphragm quickly short-circuited at a high temperature of 150 °C. If the novel hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high-temperature battery separator is used, and the electrolyte and electrode material capable of withstanding high temperature are matched, the operating temperature and safety of the battery can be further greatly improved. This research work is of great significance to greatly improve the operating temperature range of lithium-ion batteries and the safety of lithium-ion batteries. It is expected that the novel hydroxyapatite ultra-long nanowire-based high temperature battery separator can also be applied to various other types of high temperature resistant batteries and energy storage systems, such as sodium ion batteries, supercapacitors and the like. The relevant research results were published in Advanced Materials and applied for an invention patent.

    The research work was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Shanghai Municipal Science and Technology Commission, and the Shanghai Key Laboratory Innovation Initiative of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
